The story is an allegory about the illusion of freedom. A solitary lion escapes from a small provincial circus to a god-forsaken rural area of lower Bavaria. Tormented by hunger he discovers his vegetarian inclination relishing the taste of corn, apples and plums, which are growing at a nearby village. The local farmers, however, trace and hunt the beast not out of fear or for the trophy, but rather for preventing the police and professional hunters from stumbling over illegal marihuana fields embedded in their corn fields. The lion escapes the chase, although getting wounded, and retreats to the forests. A female deer finds the “King of the animals” and mysteriously saves him from his pursuers. The recovering lion and his nurse develop a tender relationship the forest has never seen before. Yet, the lion is being caught after all, locked up in a barn and sentenced to death by the villagers. However, under dramatic circumstances a little girl manages to set him free. She urges him to follow the zenith of the sun leading to Africa, the "land of the lions" where he belongs to. Weeks later, a zoologist on his family outing, hundreds of miles away somewhere in the lower Aips, will spot fresh marks of a lion’s paws, and to his further astonishment, accompanied by a deer trail. The police and public are in turmoil - however no explanation is found. Ein vegetarischer Löwe entkommt einem Kleinzirkus in Niederbayern, bei dem er mit dem Selbstverständnis lebte, der einzige Löwe auf der Welt zu sein. Auf der Flucht hält sich der Löwe in der Nähe eines Dorfes auf, das heimlich Hanf anbaut. Das Dorf fühlt sich deshalb mehr durch die polizeiliche Suche nach dem Löwen als durch diesen selbst bedroht. Ein Reh, das zum Gefährten des Löwen wird, der in der Zwischenzeit seine vegetarische Vorliebe entdeckte, rettet ihn vor den Jägern. „Der König der Tiere“ als tumber Tor in einer niederbayerischen Landschaft erkennt schließlich, dass seine bislang gewonnene Freiheit nur ein größerer Käfig war. Ein kleines Mädchen, das in der Lage ist, mit der Absurdität eines vegetarischen Löwen ganz normal umzugehen, zeigt diesem schließlich den Weg in eine ungewisse Freiheit.
